Education is the way out of poverty.

In Nepal, even government schools expect a family to pay for shoes, uniform, books and pencils. For families already struggling to eat, school is the first thing to go.

School isn’t free, even at a government school.

Every school in Nepal, including government schools, expects a child to arrive with their own shoes, uniform, books, notebooks and pencils. In rural areas, where most families are already struggling to survive, education ends up last on the list of priorities.

The Alain Rouveure Nepal Fund steps in: paying for schooling, uniform, stationery, and in many cases full boarding so that “the cost” stops being the reason for the child to be kept at home.

There’s no National Health Service in Nepal.

Sickness in the family can be a financial catastrophe. Without state healthcare, many families sell their land and their home just to pay a medical bill.

There are now laws against child labour, but hardship still pushes children out of school and, in the worst cases, towards trafficking. Keeping a family solvent is part of keeping a child safe.
